How Far Should Your Sofa Be From the TV?
The right TV distance depends on screen size, seating position, and the way the whole room is arranged. A large TV can work in a small room when the seating distance is comfortable, while a smaller TV can feel undersized when the sofa is farther away.
This calculator gives a practical planning range based on TV diagonal size. Use it as a starting point and then adjust the layout for your own preferences.

How to Measure Sofa-to-TV Distance
Measure from approximately where your eyes are when seated to the front surface of the TV screen. This is more useful than measuring from the back wall because sofa depths vary.
Measure from your normal seating position
Use the place where you normally sit rather than the rear edge of the sofa.
Measure to the screen
Measure straight to the front of the TV instead of using the full room length.
Check the whole furniture layout
A comfortable viewing distance can still produce a poor room layout. Leave room for walking, tables, doors, and other furniture.
What TV Size Works Best in a Small Apartment?
Small rooms do not automatically require small televisions. Viewing distance and furniture placement are usually more useful than room width by itself.
A deep sofa pushes the seating position farther into the room, while a shallower sofa can create more flexibility without changing the room size.
TV Size Is Only One Part of the Layout
Screen size, viewing distance, sofa depth, lighting, viewing angle, and walking space all affect how comfortable a living room feels. There is rarely one perfect arrangement for every home.
